MDM gets go-ahead for Mintek Atomiser

14 October 2011

MDM Engineering Group Limited (“MDM”) has been awarded the design, fabrication, supply and delivery to site, erection and commissioning of a complete alloy atomisation process plant which is to be integrated with Mintek’s facilities in Johannesburg, South Africa

MDM was awarded the execution contract on a Lump Sum Turnkey (LSTK) basis, the value of which is approximately US$ 5 million.  The plant will consist of an atomising plant to be situated within and integrated with Mintek’s 3 MW DC arc-furnace.

Atomisation is the breaking up of liquid into droplets.  If a molten material is atomised into droplets, these normally cool rapidly to produce solid particles or ‘powders’.  Metal powders are produced with sizes ranging from a few microns to a millimetre or two.

The design criteria is for powder production of 325 tonnes per month atomized in 6 tonne batches at 200kg per minute every 12 hours.

The atomisation plant will add considerable value to the liquid alloys produced from Mintek’s existing furnace by delivering it in a form to suit a number of possible downstream applications.

Martin Smith, MDM CEO said:
“MDM has a long-standing relationship with Mintek and we are thrilled to be working with them on this project.  The MDM Project Manager, Dave Norval, has extensive atomising experience, which will be of great value to this project”.
